Sergeant Svartsdottir looked around at her squad as they swam. I may never get used to seeing them all as quaggans, but Raven help me, that hylek’s brew is a wonder. I still can’t figure out where my mass goes, though – no! Don’t get distracted. Ah, yes, Rekka’s on our other camouflage here. The local quaggans are sure they know us and are letting us through. All is still according to plan.

She checked again as they swam up and around the bend, aided by Mikk’s hydromancy in pushing so far against the current. This is matching up with the aerial surveillance, though how Lixxa can get so much from a bird’s view over such a distance I’ll never understand. A few clicks of her tongue in the right pattern, supplemented by hand signals once she had their attention, and they silently emerged on the sandstone beach by the refurbished ancient dwelling, with Lixxa and Rekka keeping them visually cloaked now, across multiple spectra. Quaggans with golemagical goggles – the already-vanished sight nearly made her laugh, though that was also partly the tension of keeping six people’s foot-falls silent with her aeromancy.

Pausing to push her hearing with that same air magic, she heard the breathing of the lone, exhausted woman inside, deep in slumber. Pressing on her aetheric signalling device, she gave the go-ahead. Each member of her squad gave the suitable acknowledgement in their assigned order, with Dritta and Reiya going first to ensure that the local monitoring and warding hadn’t changed from the earlier scouting reports. When her time came, she followed precisely in the transformed footsteps of the one before her, keeping it to a single set of damp, flippery marks on the stone. Once they were all inside, she and Mikk worked together, as previously practiced, to dry even that bit of moisture off their feet, and she swept the dust from their planned paths before she gave the next go-ahead signal.

Each of them opened their sealed packs, and again, one at a time, with aetheric signalling between them their only communication, they slipped into the bedroom, laying out the clothing, the chocolates, and the flowers, with the accompanying note. They formed up on the signals once again, leaving in single file on the numbers, taking care not to disturb the drying footprints they’d left before, and this time leaving none on the way back to the water.

Once the last of them had signalled being back in position near the bottom of the riverbed, the mesmers dropped their cloaking illusions. The squad paused, waiting for the pair to recover a bit from that exertion, before swimming back out, once again ensuring that the local quaggans mistook them for belonging.

Only when her squad emerged down-river, far enough away from the Refuge again did the sergeant finally engage her longer-distance communicator, for all that even it was mesmo-aetheric and probably would have been safe enough for the mission proper. But that’s only “probably”, no matter what the captain thinks.

<Captain?>

After a brief pause, <Yes, Sigrid?>

<Delivery made. Exfiltration successful. Proceeding with extraction plan.>

<Excellent! Shadows guard your path, and do please give my regards to the squad.>

The sense that the sergeant picked up through the link told her that her current employer and former commanding officer was well pleased. <I shall, captain. Sneak well.>

The answer over the link was wordless, a strong sense of almost feral amusement with an accompanying nod of respect.

When Mirex later awoke, she’d find a bouquet of flowers nearly on her, with a deluxe, large box of chocolates a bit past it, and a circle of flowers around her and that. Laid out and hanging up in their limited wardrobe space in that Refuge dwelling were a variety of new maternity clothes in styles closely related to things she’d chosen for herself, some midriff-baring, and some more covering to help hide burgeoning stretch marks.

As she lifted her head to start taking it all in, she’d spy an unsealed envelope now in view that had been obscured behind the bouquet. When it was finally opened and the note within examined, it would read:

My darling Mirex,

I thought you could use some new clothes in your current size. I miss you terribly, and I love you, no matter our disagreements. I really hope to see you home again soon. You can still contact me whenever you like, you know. I’ll bring Evie to you if that’s what you want instead, of course. And in the meanwhile, I thought some flowers for my lovely redhead might be a good idea, and I know you like your chocolates, too, my love.

Desperately missing you,
Adriwyn

Looking over the calendars she’d bought the night before, Valeria sighed and started chewing on her lip, shaking her head at herself. She looked again at the valentine page and started to choke up. You know you’re being stupid about this, right? She sighed at her internal voice. Of course I am! But I can’t help it!

With another shake of her head, she closed the calendar up again, blinking back the tears that were threatening to fall. So talk to her, idiot! You have that option, at least! She nodded to herself this time, and sat down, trying to compose herself enough that at least her thoughts wouldn’t be shaky, no matter her voice.

<Are you awake, cousin?> She hoped she was using the device correctly, still not used to being the one to initiate contact.

<Hullo, darlin’! I am, yes. What’s up?>

The redhead couldn’t help but smile at Adriwyn’s mental voice, but now she had to answer that question, and she flushed, feeling foolish all over again. <I… I was… I got the calendar.> Idiot! You sound so stupid!

<Did you, now? And you thought of talking to me? I bet it’s really about Alex, but I still haven’t managed to make you two your own link yet.> Her tone was gently teasing, though it did seem a touch apologetic at that last part.

<I… umm… well, in part….> She flushed again. Why can’t I just ask her?

<Then what’s the rest of it, darlin’?> Her mental tone was surprisingly gentle, at least to her cousin.

<I… Are you two – three! – really coming home?> She cringed at her own pleading tone. At least that’s finally out in the open….

The diminutive tow-head blinked and paused for a moment in the cleaning of her clothes she’d been doing in the river. <Oh, sweetheart, are we worrying you that much? I’m so sorry… and I … well. I can’t actually promise, but I certainly believe that we will indeed be back home, and fairly soon at that.>

<But you can’t promise… that means risk, doesn’t it?>

<It does, darlin’. Alex is champing at the bit, and I’m almost recovered – and she’s not sounding like she’ll settle for less than going after that Mantle witch ourselves. And you know I can’t let her do that alone.>

Valeria sighed heavily, nodding numbly as she sat alone in her room. <Of course you can’t – and I wouldn’t want you to. I just wish you two could leave it to others… but I suppose I can understand, too. But you’d better come back to us!>

<We’ll do our best, darlin’. And our best is really good. Hold onto that, hmm?>

<I’ll… I’ll try.>

Lady Dore,

I hope this
letter finds you safe, I know that you’ve been actively helping out with the
efforts in Lake Doric. I won’t waste time with silly greetings, or any of the
traditional frivolities of normal letters. I’m writing to ask you for your
help, or at the very least your advice. Five days from now, will be the one
year anniversary of mine and Adriwyn’s meeting and I was hoping to do something
extra special to celebrate the occasion.

Honestly, I
find myself at a complete loss of how to truly surprise her in the absolute
best way. If I can at least give her one happy anniversary or holiday, I will
do everything in my power to do so. Since you are pretty much her mother, I was
hoping you would be able to offer some suggestions in accomplishing this goal.
If you can, I would appreciate it from the bottom of my heart to hear your
advice.

Sincerely,
Alexandria LaCoria-Eskara

The priestess looked over the letter again, finally being someplace where she could take the time to write a response.

Dear Magister LaCoria-Eskara,

Given what I’ve heard has transpired in the meanwhile, the best suggestion I can offer you is something like a swimming date with food that you both enjoy. I suspect that her own ideas would be close to that, anyway, though they might involve hot springs and something more extravagant for a meal. Because of how she grew up, her idea of such a celebration is more about the people involved than it seems to be for most lasses. And given your current location (as of the last I heard) and Adriwyn’s limited abilities of the moment – well, Nathan’s a reasonable cook, but hot springs or over-sized bathing facilities might have to wait.

I’m very sorry that I’ve not been in a position to answer your note in a more timely fashion – though I confess that part of that has been knowing of the intervening events before I got back to Divinity’s Reach at all, and those events seemed to make the response I already gave inevitable in any case.

I’m sure she’ll love whatever you want to do, considering that it will be with you. That’s what matters more to her, anyway.

Sincerely,
Lady Alyssia Dore von Durheim
