‘I used to wish… that mother would get well, and things would go back to normal. But now…? I haven’t considered that in a while.’ She sighs, tapping her cheek. ‘I suppose… I wish for these crazy wars to end.’ She snorts, shaking her head at herself. ‘Not that it’s possible. Another Birthday Prepared

Valeria mused to herself as she bathed and dressed. Tori’s probably still asleep, but she probably won’t get grumpy if I wake her this late.

It had been a good patrol, and now it was time to try to giver her baby sister a nice surprise. She made her way down the stairs and along the hallways into what had been the Cardiff portion of the estate This always feels like I’m a ghost in my own house… we need more people. She bit her lip absently as she walked and mused. I’m not sure I can really afford to hire anyone, though… not with the way the books are. We may owe Adri more than we have.

She shook her head and forced the gloomy thoughts from her mind as she entered into the well-lit, oversized sitting room, and passed through it into the kitchen. Gadget, the eccentric cook in her cousin’s nominal employ, was there to greet her, and together they put the finishing touches on the brunch and birthday cake.

When Val started carrying the tray out, she found her cousin Adriwyn waiting for her, with a small package in her hand a smile on her face. ‘G’day, Val. I’ll walk with you, at least some of the way.’ With that, the smaller woman fell in beside her.

‘You got her something, too?’

A soft chuckle. ‘Made something. She’s been after me for a link for a while, and I finally managed to finish it up just in time. And yes, I know, I owe you links with my

fiancées as well. You’d have had those first, but for the timing, and the… recent events.’

‘Oh… does that mean we’re getting those soon, too?’ She felt awkward asking that, but the tow-head nodded without seeming put out by the question.

‘Next on my list, darlin’, and close to done. Though Mirex is having trouble wearing such things currently, so it may be that only Alex’s will do you any good at first. But I’m doing them both up anyway.’

‘Thank you.’ Val smiled at her cousin. ‘That will be nice.’

Adriwyn giggled, then teased, ‘Aye. Then you two can complain about me behind my back.’ Rather than give the taller redhead a chance to demur, she changed the subject. ‘Do you want to give this to Tori for me? I don’t really want to intrude on your party, especially not when you’ve done so much more for her birthday than I have.’

Val blinked, and started to sputter a little. ‘You… you don’t have to….’

Adri shook her head and placed her little present on the tray as she steadied it against her cousin’s surprise. ‘I know I don’t have to. But I feel like I’d be intruding. And once you give that to her, either of you can talk to me anyway, if you choose. I think that’s good enough. You just go on and have a nice time with your baby sister, hmm?’ She stretched up to kiss Val’s cheek before turning back.

‘I… all right… thank you.’ Val shook her head, once again confused by her cousin, but growing more pleased by the arrangement as she thought on it, continuing to her sister’s room.
