Hey, do you have issues starting things? Every time I start to write something, I seem to have difficulty with the very start of what I am writing. I re-write and re-write it, but I never really find something I feel satisfied with. I just started writing a book, and I had to skip the first chapter because I kept getting stuck. I know how I want it to be, but I never feel good about how I am saying it.

neil-gaiman:

When I record an audio book, the last thing I do is normally to re-record the opening, because now I know what it sounds like. When I write a book, often the last thing I do is rewrite the beginning entirely, because now I know what my book is about and I know how it really begins.

The start of a story or a book are the marks you make on paper that signify that something has begun. Skipping the first chapter to get going is fine. (I kept getting stuck on The Graveyard Book, so I started at Chapter Four.) But then, anything you do to get words on paper is fine.

Write your book. Get to the end. Rewrite to make it better, beginning and all – and perhaps that’s when you’ll write your first chapter. Then start to worry about the next thing instead.

The is image number 6, called “Out of the Blue”.
This is a self-portrait I took in early February. I had set up an ice climbing shoot at the popular Athabasca Glacier ice cave, and got to the parking lot about an hour before the climbers did. While walking towards the ice I noticed a green glow over my right shoulder. I power-walked to the glacier (you never know how long an aurora display will last!), thinking of an effective image I could set up quickly. I set up the composition, got the camera to shoot continuously, ran over to the cave, dropped a headlamp at the back of it, and then walked up that little pedestal of ice. This was the result.
Thankfully, the show lasted well after the climbers arrived and were able to shoot some aurora climbing shots as well. The cave has since collapsed, but made for many memorable moments. I’ll share a few more in the comments here.
My shoutout today goes to several fellow landscape Canadian photographers who blew me away with their work this past year: @waynesimpsonphoto, @DaveBrosha, @kylemcdougallphoto, @biglandhynes, @cjonesphoto, @stephendesroches, @danibanff, @viktoriahaack, @francis.gagnon and @nick_fitzhardinge, among so many others! A Present for Ms Smith

A courier comes early after the most recent tea night, presenting himself to the guards at Rinswarth. ‘Wintersday package for Miss Smith from…’ he pauses as he squints at his instructions, ‘Countess Jardin. Who takes delivery?’

Once the parcel finally made its way to its intended recipient, it would prove to have a more festive package within, and a letter:

Dear Ms Smith,

I’ve long suspected a certain amount of parallel skills between us, if not perhaps of background, and yet I wasn’t sure enough to send the enclosed gift. However, Linneia has assured me that you at least also collect blades, so even if I’m wrong, perhaps it will be taken with the spirit of appreciation that’s intended. And if I’m right… you can never have too many of decent quality such “consumables”.

I’ve been struggling with what to get you, both as a token of my congratulations for your engagement, and in appreciation for the dancing lessons. I’m sorry this isn’t more appropriate, and that my ingenuity has failed me, and hope you’ll accept this in the spirit of the season despite my failings.

Warm regards,
Countess Adriwyn Jardin

When the present itself was opened, it would turn out to be two braces of exceptionally well-balanced and properly edged darksteel throwing knives, and a matching dozen shuriken, all in a black leather carrying case with a flap that can be used to secure them all in place, or tied back the other way to leave them handy for throwing from inside a coat or a skirt.

your archetype is the realist.traits: practical, understanding, honest, brutal, logical, creator, intelligent, sensible, down-to-earth, reasonablethe realist is most commonly used to symbolize the highest possible outcome in a dire situation. they are the ones who have everything planned, and hand out reality checks as if they were pamphlets to those who need them–which, quite honestly, is everyone who isn’t a realist. although they can be harsh (brutal truth over merciful), they are nurturers and care more than they let on. realists tend to do things that will lead to the best outcome, and use their knowledge of reading people to manipulate situations and problems in order to get out of a rock and a hard place. fictional characters that are realists: hermione granger, dana scully, thorin oakenshield, lestrade (from sherlock), leia organa, willow rosenbergother personality types that go with this: ravenclaw, horned serpent, poseidon, artemis
